Tyre Safety for UK Drivers: Legal Limits and Your Responsibility

UK tyre laws are strict and the penalties serious. Here is everything drivers need to know about legal tyre requirements and how to stay compliant.

UK Tyre Legal Requirements Every Driver Must Know

Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, every vehicle used on public roads in the UK must be fitted with tyres that are of the correct type for the vehicle, in good condition with no cuts, bulges, or exposed cords, inflated to the correct pressure, and have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread width around the full circumference of the tyre. These are minimum legal requirements — the actual safety threshold is widely acknowledged to be at least 3mm, where braking performance begins to degrade significantly.

The penalties for non-compliance are substantial. Each illegal tyre can result in a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points. For a vehicle with four illegal tyres, this means potential fines of £10,000 and 12 penalty points — the latter being sufficient to result in a driving ban for most licence holders. Additionally, your vehicle insurance is likely to be invalidated if you are involved in an accident and your tyres are found to be below the legal minimum. The financial and legal exposure is significant.

Your Responsibilities as a Driver

As a driver, you are legally responsible for the condition of your tyres, even if you did not personally maintain them. It is not a defence to claim that you did not know a tyre was illegal. The law places the obligation on the driver to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy before driving it. This means regular tyre inspections — ideally monthly — are not just good practice but a legal duty.
