How to Know When Your Tyres Need Replacing

From tread depth checks to sidewall cracking — learn the clear signs that it is time for new tyres before they become a safety issue on UK roads.

The Legal Minimum Tread Depth and Why It Matters

In the UK, the legal minimum tyre tread depth for cars and light vehicles is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre width. Driving on tyres below this limit carries a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. Most tyre safety experts — including TyreSafe — recommend replacing tyres when tread reaches 3mm, as braking performance degrades significantly below this level, particularly in wet conditions.

Checking your tread depth is easy with a 20p coin. Insert it into the tread groove. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread is below 3mm and you should consider replacement. You can also look for the tread wear indicators — small raised sections moulded into the main tread grooves. When the tread is level with these indicators, the tyre is at 1.6mm and must be replaced immediately.

Other Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing

Beyond tread depth, look for these warning signs: sidewall cracks or bulges (which can cause blowouts), vibration through the steering wheel (which may indicate uneven wear or internal damage), and persistent slow punctures that cannot be repaired. Age is also a factor — tyres older than five years should be inspected by a professional annually, and tyres over ten years old should always be replaced regardless of visual condition, as rubber degrades over time even without visible damage.

If you notice any of these signs on your vehicle, contact Just Mobile Tyres for a free tyre inspection and quote. We can often arrange same-day replacement in Northampton and across the surrounding area, ensuring your vehicle is safe to drive without delay.
